Vet Tails Excerpt – Piggy Sue’s Extended Family

Last month’s story was about Piggy Sue and her two piggy friends getting a facelift because they couldn’t see. At the time of piggy surgery, Preetha, their devoted owner, asked us if we might be able to also help her goats, Cleopatra and Sheba. They both had arthritis and she was keen to explore complementary therapy options to help improve their quality of life. We initiated treatment with some herbs, homeopathics and neutraceuticals to help restore joint function until Preetha was able to bring them in for a thorough check as well as some acupuncture and NIS.

A couple of weeks later Cleo and Sheba arrived at our clinic at the back of a van. Tara and I examined Cleo and Sheba, took some blood samples, gave them some injections to help and then treated them with acupuncture and NIS. They required a second treatment two weeks later and since I had the week-end off, Super Sue and I took a drive to see Preetha and her menagerie. It was a scenic drive and we found Preetha’s patch of paradise nestled in a beautiful place. As we drove through the gates we spotted Piggy Sue and Co. happily walking around the paddock next to the stream in which they wallowed; they had made a good recovery and were looking well.

We examined and treated Sheba and Cleo and were then introduced to the rest of the menagerie: a number of rescued goats, sheep, a cow, chickens, wildlife and their bunny rabbit. Sue and I were in awe of the immense and superb rabbit hutch that Preetha’s partner had built for their rabbit they rescued as a very tiny baby… but this was just the beginning of the rabbit palace. The bunny hutch was attached to the side of the house and the bunny had access to the house through a cat door. It turned out that bunny didn’t spend much time in its hutch but happily hopped around the house, was fully toilet trained and jumps into bed every morning to wake Preetha up!

It is such a pleasure and privilege to work with animal owners like Preetha who are so devoted to the health and well-being of their animals and will do everything in their power to help an animal in need.
